unless you want to keep th erecordings for ever/share with a friend

(and you can still copy to a VHS of need be)

then a large hard disk recorder is the way to go.

eg 250GB Dual Tuner (watch one programme, record one programme) Freeview recorder from Which? Magazine recomended

You could always buy a cheap DVD recorder later if you really found that you needed to copy a programme to disk.. but 250GB/350GB is a lot of recording space...I know nothing about digital video recorders. Can you please advise what is best, dvd or not to dvd, also suggest?
Most viewers are happiest with a cable or satellite box with a built in hard drive for recording. It's very simple to set up and operate, and you don't need external equipment, cables, etc.

Check your cable or satellite provider for the DVRs that they offer. In my case (Comcast), paying the monthly fee for the HD DVR got me their HD channel package with the deal.
i have a Panasonic DVD hard drive with free view %26amp; you can record to discs to keep %26amp; play DVDs as well, well worth that little extra you have to pay out
