I'm buying an old Terracotta cross, can anyone advise on a way to check the age? Apparently its 10th C.?

I think you would have to spend a lot of money having the clay analysed in a laboratory. Unfortunately, it's very easy to fake such artifacts - a mould, clay, and dirt after firing to make it look aged.
