I have just got a Jack Russell puppy. Can anyone offer me some useful tips or advise?

Hi, I can I have two.

Well they look cute and everything but they are Terriers.

My 6 month old needs three half an hour walks a day plus 15 minutes on the treadmill to get his energy down enough to sleep, they are one of the most high energy dogs in existence and suck as a first pet for people.

Although they are extremely intelligent they will fight you the whole way, they will pull on a lead every walk unless you assert yourself quickly and they LOVE to bite and rip and chew everything they can.

They are exceptionally quick to toilet train if you have the time, otherwise they'll never get it.

Regardless of coat go get a flea comb and start combing their fur everyday since they shed a bucket load and it gets everywhere.

Also they need three feeds a day minimum when puppies.

Good luck, because they are absolute devils.

ADD: Forgot to mention they love to dig, go get a plastic pool and fill it with soil and/or sand and show him that's the place to dig or your garden/pillows/carpet/car will suffer.

ADD: The person who recommended the Dog Bible has recommended the greatest dog book ever. It is just awesome!!

You should definitely get it, it has helped me.I have just got a Jack Russell puppy. Can anyone offer me some useful tips or advise?
I would suggest crate training. For a dog, the crate is kinda like it's own den. Dogs will not defecate in their den, so they will hold it.

But keep in mind that puppies can't hold it for very long. The best way to ';guestimate'; how long he can hold it is add how old he is in months plus one. (For example, if he is two months old, then he can hold it for three hours).

Start taking him out every hour, after he eats, once you are done playing, and immediately when he wakes up. Take notice of when he 'goes' and how often.

And should the little guy have an accident, don't punish him. Odds are he just couldn't hold it. Immediately take him out and let him sniff around. Should you catch him in the act, shout, clap, do something to grab his attention, and take him outside.

Praise him like crazy when he does go outside. You want to positively reinforce his good behavior. Swatting him only breaks the bond between owner and dog.

There is a great book out there. It's called The Dog Bible. In it, it talks about breeds (health issues, ect), behaviors of the dog (what is considered aggressive and what is considered submissive), types of collars to use, types of food and how often, training, ect. Everything you need.

And good luck. I hope this helps.I have just got a Jack Russell puppy. Can anyone offer me some useful tips or advise?
They house train really easy and are so intelligent

give lots of play time, they love things like agility and they love to run..

long walks....toys, to keep them from chewing

and they can be diggers if left in the yard alone for too long, they can dig to China, no joke...but they are easly triained and can be stopped of the digging habit

it is best to walk at least 3-45 mins each time taken out, and as Renzoous said they do great on treadmills..they love it.

but, try to make the exercise always outside and don't use a treadmill unless is bad weather...they get better exercise outside.

they love to play Frisbee and catch so good.

brush good, cuts back on the shedding...although they don't shed alot, they do shed that short hair.

make sure you put on Pet Tabs Plus for vitamins, they are great

and he needs to be put on HeartGuard Plus for heartworms and hook worms, your vet will tell you when to do that....but must be given each month, year round..

you will enjoy your little new best friend, they are a great breed, and love to please their humans and sleep, well scoot over, they love to sleep with you as well.

good luck and hope you have loads of years with your new best friend.

best dogs foods to feed are

don't feed and store bought brands or these brands, are full of by products, and fillers..too much wheat, corn, meal

Iams

Eukanuba

Science Diet

No Purina brands

again good luck
jacks are very high energy so walk them often they are also sport dogs so something like herding competitions or agility would be really good for them. they are extremly smart so training them should be simple but remember to praise and reward them when a job or trick is done well. also don;t get it into the habit of biting Terriers of any kind have very sharp teeth and while they aren't viloent by nature they do tend to play bite rather hard so remember to teach it easy and what it means but other wise you have a lovely dog on your hands.
Hello,

The JRT is highly trainable, but he has a mind of his own and won't stand for boredom. If you don't keep him entertained, he'll find his own amusements, and you probably won't be happy with the results.

Visit mt web site, there are a lot of useful tips and advice on training. You would especially need some help with house training.
yeah... watch the Dog Whisperer... and get Cesar Milan's book called ';Be the Pack Leader';, and put to practice everything in it
get rid of it,lots of starving kids could do with the money instead of some flea bitten ,footpath fouling mutt
Look after it
train it.
get a monkey instead
